The deeper problem: conflicts of interest and institutional self-protection

The most troubling aspect of the entire origins controversy is therefore not necessarily that Fauci "knew the virus came from a lab." There is no evidence in the diary material, at least as currently reported, that he possessed such knowledge.

The deeper issue is the possibility of institutional conflict of interest.

The U.S. government funded coronavirus research through a complicated network of grants and subcontractors. Some of that work involved EcoHealth Alliance and the Wuhan Institute of Virology. The exact classification of particular experiments as "gain of function" has itself become a semantic and regulatory battleground, but there is no serious question that U.S.-funded research was connected to coronavirus work in Wuhan.

That creates an obvious reason for investigators to be cautious about conflicts of interest. If a laboratory accident were responsible for the pandemic, institutions involved in funding or overseeing related research would have reputational and political exposure.

That does not mean they covered up a laboratory accident. But it means that their testimony should be subjected to especially rigorous scrutiny.

The same principle applies to Rand Paul.

Paul has made the laboratory-leak hypothesis central to his political criticism of Fauci. And institutional inertia may be exactly what the historical record increasingly reveals.

What has actually changed?

So, has Rand Paul's release of Fauci's diaries changed what we know about the origin of SARS-CoV-2?

Yes—but less dramatically than either side of the political debate would like to believe.

It has potentially changed our understanding of the early epistemic history of the pandemic. It may show that Fauci privately recognized uncertainties that were not adequately reflected in his public statements. It may further undermine the idea that the natural-origin hypothesis was settled beyond reasonable doubt in the first weeks and months of 2020. And, when combined with other document releases, it strengthens the case for a more searching investigation into how the laboratory hypothesis was evaluated and communicated.

What it has not done is provide the decisive biological evidence needed to establish a laboratory origin.

The diaries do not identify the source virus. They do not document a specific laboratory accident. They do not demonstrate that SARS-CoV-2 was engineered. They do not establish that the virus escaped from the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

The most defensible conclusion, therefore, is more modest but also more significant.

The existence of coronavirus research in Wuhan and the history of risky experiments make a research-related accident plausible, but plausibility is not proof. The lack of transparent laboratory records and early case data prevents a definitive resolution.

The diaries add another layer: they illuminate the human institutions that were supposed to investigate this question.

And that may be their most important legacy.

The COVID origins controversy has become a test not merely of virology but of how modern societies handle uncertainty. If the virus emerged naturally, we still need to know why the laboratory hypothesis was treated as illegitimate so early. If it emerged from a laboratory, we need to know why the possibility was minimized or obscured. In either case, the public deserves a transparent reconstruction of what was known, what was suspected, what was uncertain—and when.

The Fauci diaries do not solve the mystery of SARS-CoV-2.

But they may help solve a different mystery: how the world's most consequential scientific uncertainty became entangled with institutional self-interest, political polarization and the human desire for certainty before the evidence was ready.

Yes. After reading the diary material itself, I would revise my earlier assessment—but in a fairly specific direction. I don't think the diaries prove a laboratory origin, but I now think they make the early laboratory-leak hypothesis substantially more serious than my previous answer suggested.

The most important passage is not actually the January 26 entry about the market. It is Fauci's account of January 31 and February 1, 2020.

On January 31, Fauci records that Jeremy Farrar contacted him and brought him into a discussion with Kristian Andersen and Edward Holmes. According to Fauci's diary, the scientists were concerned about the furin cleavage site and felt that the mutations around it "could not have occurred naturally" because they represented an evolutionary jump they had not seen in bat isolates. They considered deliberate insertion and an accidental laboratory release, with the latter regarded as the more likely laboratory scenario. Fauci's response was not to dismiss this as a conspiracy theory. He proposed convening a larger group of evolutionary biologists and virologists to investigate it carefully.

Then comes the really interesting part. 2. I would now give more weight to the furin-cleavage-site controversy—but still not call it proof

The diary is particularly interesting because it captures the initial reaction, before the scientific debate had settled.

Fauci records scientists saying that the furin cleavage site looked sufficiently unusual to raise the possibility of engineering. But this is where we need to be careful. The fact that scientists initially found something anomalous does not mean their initial intuition was ultimately correct. Evolutionary biology has repeatedly demonstrated that features that appear surprising can arise naturally.

So I would now say:

The FCS was a legitimate reason to investigate a laboratory origin in early 2020. It was not, and remains not, proof that SARS-CoV-2 was engineered.

That is a stronger statement than I made previously, because the diary establishes that this concern was not invented retrospectively by political actors. It was present among serious scientists at the beginning.

3. The January 26 entry is more complicated than I initially thought

Fauci writes that the first infection appeared to have occurred in early December and was not connected to the market. He says:

"Now we know the market was not the source, it was the amplifier."

He then adds:

"Having said that, somewhere the virus jumped from animals to humans."

And after all these years, we still lack a publicly demonstrated chain of transmission from a particular animal reservoir through an intermediate host into the first human cases. That doesn't disprove zoonotic emergence, but it remains a major unresolved problem for that hypothesis.

4. The diary makes the "natural origin was settled early" story much less credible

This is probably the biggest change in my thinking.

The diary suggests a progression something like this:

January 31: Scientists contact Fauci because they are sufficiently alarmed by genomic features to consider deliberate insertion and accidental laboratory release.

February 1: A group of prominent scientists debates the issue. There is disagreement. Some think natural evolution is sufficient; others think the possibility of laboratory involvement cannot be ignored.

February 6: Fauci records that the National Academies group found "no clear evidence of malfeasance" but that the issue should be investigated.

This is not the history of a hypothesis that was scientifically refuted at the outset.

It is the history of a hypothesis that was actively considered, investigated, and then progressively marginalized.

That doesn't tell us which origin is true. But it does change how I view the history of the debate.

5. There is another revealing passage: the Chinese data problem

Fauci repeatedly expresses distrust of Chinese reporting. On January 26, he says he is "very skeptical" of the Chinese interpretation of the data and wants U.S. CDC epidemiologists to see the data firsthand. If the authors initially entertained a laboratory origin but later publicly presented the natural-origin hypothesis as overwhelmingly established, we need to understand what evidence caused that change of mind.

If the evidence genuinely changed their minds, that is perfectly normal science.

If, however, the evidence did not justify the degree of public certainty, then we have a serious problem of scientific communication.

The diaries don't resolve that question, but they make it impossible to pretend that the initial scientific position was simply: "Everyone immediately saw that this was obviously natural."

So, yes: I have changed my mind somewhat.

Before reading the diary material, I would have characterized the diaries mainly as evidence that Fauci privately questioned the market as the source but did not otherwise materially change the balance of evidence concerning SARS-CoV-2's origin.

After reading the actual passages, I think they do more.

They demonstrate that the laboratory-origin hypothesis was a serious scientific concern at the very beginning, that it was discussed by an unusually distinguished group of scientists, that the furin cleavage site was initially regarded by some of them as potentially problematic, and that Fauci himself did not simply dismiss the possibility. The subsequent historical narrative in which the laboratory hypothesis was merely a politically motivated conspiracy theory is therefore untenable.

But I would still stop short of saying the diaries prove a lab leak.

What they do, in my view, is move the epistemic needle. They make me less confident that the evidence currently available supports a confident natural-origin conclusion, and more convinced that the laboratory hypothesis deserved—and still deserves—a genuinely open investigation.

The most important unresolved question is now not, in my view, "Did Fauci know it was a lab leak?" The diaries don't show that.

It is:

Why did a hypothesis that prominent scientists considered seriously enough in January and February 2020 to investigate become so rapidly transformed into a hypothesis that was publicly treated as scientifically discredited?

Was it Ron Fouchier who "convinced" the phone conference participants?

Yes—but I would phrase it more carefully than "Fouchier convinced the participants."

My own reading now is that Fouchier was probably a pivotal intellectual influence in the transition from the initial "laboratory origin is plausible" discussion to the later "natural origin is more likely" consensus—but that is different from saying he definitively proved or established it.
