![]() Brendan Graham Dempsey's Emergentism is one of the more interesting recent attempts to construct a religious worldview from the scientific story of cosmic evolution. It belongs to the same broad intellectual family as Big History, Teilhard de Chardin's evolutionary theology, Alfred North Whitehead's process philosophy, complexity theory, and Ken Wilber's Integral Theory. But Dempsey wants to move beyond these precedents. His ambition is not merely to interpret evolution spiritually, but to turn emergence itself into the central metaphysical principle of a new religion appropriate to what he calls the metamodern world. ![]() Brendan Graham Dempsey The result is intellectually ambitious, rhetorically attractive, and potentially fertile. It is also considerably more speculative than its scientific vocabulary sometimes suggests. The central problem is easy to formulate: Dempsey moves from the demonstrable fact that novel properties emerge in complex systems to a much stronger claim that the universe as a whole is progressively awakening, acquiring consciousness, learning, developing meaning, and perhaps even becoming God. The first proposition is a scientific and philosophical thesis about emergence. The second is a metaphysical interpretation. The difficulty is that the transition between the two is not established by complexity science itself. That distinction is crucial. Dempsey's Emergentism is most convincing when it describes emergence; it becomes increasingly controversial when emergence is transformed into cosmic teleology. From parts to wholesDempsey begins with a deceptively simple observation: wholes can possess properties that their components do not possess individually. An orchestra provides his illustrative analogy. Individual sections of the orchestra have their own characteristics, but their coordinated interaction produces something newthe symphonythat cannot be identified with any individual section. This is a legitimate and important insight. Science contains many examples of emergent organization. Molecules have properties that individual atoms do not; cells possess biological organization absent from their constituent molecules; organisms exhibit metabolism and reproduction; nervous systems generate forms of information processing that individual neurons do not display in isolation. Dempsey consequently proposes a hierarchical picture of reality in which new levels emerge from earlier ones. His basic sequence is Matter ? Life ? Mind ? Culture, with the Universe itself functioning as the encompassing whole. This is a powerful narrative structure because it gives us something that purely reductionistic descriptions often lack: an account of how genuinely new levels of organization appear without denying their physical basis. But there is already an important philosophical ambiguity here. Emergence does not necessarily mean that a new level possesses an ontologically independent substance. Nor does it necessarily mean that the new level violates physical explanation. The wetness of water is not a mysterious substance floating above H2O molecules. It is a higher-level property of a system of molecules under appropriate conditions. Similarly, biological organization does not automatically require a new biological "stuff" in addition to chemistry. Dempsey is aware of the distinction between levels, but his religious interpretation sometimes gives emergence a much stronger metaphysical role than is warranted by the scientific concept itself. The great chain of emergenceThe real originality of Emergentism is therefore not the claim that emergence occurs. That idea is hardly new. Dempsey himself acknowledges a long intellectual lineage extending from the British emergentists through Whitehead, Teilhard, Wilber and contemporary complexity theorists. His project is better understood as a synthesis of these traditions than as the discovery of a fundamentally new theory of evolution. There is nevertheless something distinctive about the synthesis. Dempsey wants to make emergence the organizing principle of a religious cosmology. Matter gives rise to Life. Life gives rise to Mind. Mind gives rise to Culture. Each transition introduces new capacities for organization, information processing, learning and reflexivity. The universe therefore becomes progressively capable of knowing itself. This is an enormously compelling story. It also resembles the narrative structure found in many versions of Big History. David Christian's Big History, Eric Chaisson's cosmic evolution, Tyler Volk's "Quarks to Culture," Bobby Azarian's evolutionary model, and Dempsey's Emergentism all attempt to describe the increasing organization and complexity of the universe across enormous temporal scales. But there is an important distinction between describing a historical sequence and explaining why that sequence should be interpreted as a developmental trajectory. A sequence is not automatically a direction. Complexity is not the same as progressThis is perhaps the central weakness of Dempsey's model. There certainly has been an extraordinary increase in complexity across cosmic history. The early universe was comparatively simple. Stars, galaxies, planets, chemistry, life, nervous systems, organisms, societies and technological civilizations subsequently appeared. But "complexity" is not a synonym for "progress." Evolutionary history is not a continuous staircase. It contains extinctions, simplifications, regressions, dead ends, ecological collapses and enormous periods of relative stability. Parasites can become simpler. Organisms can lose structures that their ancestors possessed. Evolution frequently favors simplification when simplification is advantageous. Nor does evolution maximize complexity as such. Natural selection favors differential reproductive success under particular environmental conditions. Sometimes that produces greater complexity; sometimes it does not. This matters because Dempsey's language occasionally turns a contingent historical pattern into a cosmic principle. He writes of the universe as "ceaselessly complexifying" and portrays it as developing and maturing, eventually becoming increasingly rich in structure, relationship and diversity. As a poetic description of the broad history of the universe, this is defensible. As a scientific law, it is much harder to defend. There is no established law of physics stating that the universe must become progressively more complex. Complexity can arise under particular boundary conditions, energy flows and evolutionary dynamics. Its emergence is remarkable, but that does not make it inevitable. The distinction between "complexity has repeatedly emerged" and "the universe is intrinsically driven toward complexity" is therefore fundamental. Dempsey sometimes slides from the first proposition toward the second without providing an independent argument for the transition. The thermodynamic problemDempsey is particularly interested in complexity science because it appears to challenge the old picture of a universe governed by inexorable decline. He discusses thermodynamics and evolution as developments that were historically interpreted as supporting a bleak, reductionistic worldview: entropy seemed to imply cosmic heat death, while Darwinian evolution seemed to imply blind variation and selection. There is a useful corrective here. The second law of thermodynamics does not prohibit local increases in order or complexity. Open systems can maintain and generate highly organized structures by exporting entropy to their environments. Earth is an obvious example: solar energy flows through the biosphere and supports extraordinary organization while total entropy production remains consistent with thermodynamics. But this does not mean that thermodynamics has been overturned. Nor does it establish that the universe is "winding up" rather than winding down. These are different descriptions operating at different levels. The universe can experience local and historical increases in complexity while remaining globally subject to entropy increase. Indeed, the emergence of stars, planets and life occurs within a universe whose thermodynamic evolution remains entirely compatible with the second law. This is precisely where evolutionary spirituality can become vulnerable to what might be called the "complexity-versus-entropy fallacy." Complexity does not cancel entropy. Biological evolution does not refute thermodynamics. And the emergence of organization does not imply that the universe possesses a built-in metaphysical preference for organization. Dempsey's model would be considerably stronger if it treated this not as a conflict between two cosmic tendencies but as a problem of explaining how local complexity-generating processes operate within an overall thermodynamic framework. From emergence to consciousnessThe most fascinatingand most speculativestep comes next. Dempsey interprets the sequence Matter ? Life ? Mind ? Culture as a progressive deepening of consciousness. His later work develops this picture further, describing nervous systems as a new level of information processing and distinguishing genetic learning at the level of populations from individual learning at the level of organisms with brains. There is genuine explanatory value here. The evolution of nervous systems did indeed transform the possibilities of information processing. Organisms equipped with brains could construct internal models of their environments, learn during their individual lifetimes, anticipate future conditions and modify behavior rapidly. But there is a difference between increasing information-processing capacity and increasing consciousness. A computer can process information without thereby becoming conscious. A bacterial regulatory network processes information in a perfectly legitimate biological sense without necessarily possessing subjective experience. Even among animals, consciousness comes in degrees and forms that remain scientifically and philosophically controversial. Consequently, the transition from Matter to Life to Mind should not be presented as if the emergence of consciousness were simply the next obvious rung on a universally established ladder. The hard problem of consciousness remains precisely the question of how or whether subjective experience follows from physical processes. Emergentism can say that consciousness emerges at a certain level of organization, but saying "it emerges" does not by itself explain why experience exists. Emergence can name the phenomenon without solving the explanatory problem. The universe as a learning systemDempsey's most provocative move is to characterize the universe itself as learning. Here his model intersects with contemporary ideas about self-organization, information, adaptation and evolutionary learning. The appearance of increasingly sophisticated information-processing systems can indeed be interpreted as a kind of cumulative learning process. Genes store information about past environments; nervous systems permit organisms to acquire information during individual lifetimes; cultures preserve and transmit vastly larger bodies of information across generations. This is a fruitful analogy. But "the universe learns" can mean two radically different things. In the weak sense, the universe contains increasingly sophisticated learning systems. That is uncontroversial. In the strong sense, the universe itself is a learning subject. That is a metaphysical thesis. Dempsey often moves toward the second formulation. He asks us to conceive of the Universe as something more like a living organism that develops and matures. The metaphor is evocative. The scientific justification is much less clear. A universe containing organisms that learn is not necessarily itself an organism that learns. The distinction between a system containing conscious agents and a system that is itself conscious is precisely the issue that panpsychism, cosmopsychism and related philosophies attempt to resolve. Emergentism therefore risks confusing an emergent property of certain subsystems with a property of the total system. The theological leap: God emergesThis is where Dempsey's model becomes genuinely radical. He does not merely want to say that consciousness emerges within the universe. He proposes a theological reinterpretation in which God can be understood as emerging through cosmic evolution. In his formulation, the primordial God can be distinguished from a "consequent" God who emerges and develops within time. Elsewhere he describes the project even more explicitly: the universe is developing God, and human beings participate in the process through religious praxis. This is recognizably Whiteheadian and Teilhardian. It also provides Dempsey with an elegant solution to a classic theological problem. If God is conceived as absolutely complete, immutable and outside history, evolution becomes something happening to creation but not to God. The divine reality remains essentially unchanged while the universe undergoes dramatic transformation. Dempsey instead proposes a developmental theology. The universe becomes the arena in which divinity becomes progressively actualized. This is philosophically interesting. But it also changes the meaning of the word "God" almost completely. If God emerges in time, then God is not the ultimate explanation of emergence. God is one of its productsor perhaps its ultimate emergent property. That creates a profound question of ontological priority. Why does God emerge? What mechanism makes divine emergence possible? Why should increasing complexity culminate in divinity rather than simply in increasingly complex matter, organisms, minds and cultures? And most importantly: what empirical observation could distinguish a universe in which God is emerging from a universe in which complexification is simply occurring? Dempsey does not provide an empirical answer. Nor should we necessarily expect him to. These are metaphysical questions. But that means Emergentism should not be presented as a straightforward scientific deduction from complexity theory. It is a theological interpretation of scientific history. The Omega Point problemDempsey's theology also bears comparison with Teilhard de Chardin's Omega Point. Both envision evolution as more than an undirected sequence of adaptations. Both identify increasing consciousness and complexity as central to cosmic development. Both place humanity within a much larger evolutionary process. But Dempsey's version is more explicitly connected to contemporary complexity science and metamodern spirituality. The danger, however, is the same one that confronted Teilhard: the tendency to interpret the actual history of evolution retrospectively as if it had always been heading toward its present destination. We know that Homo sapiens appeared. We know that human consciousness exists. We know that technological civilization has emerged. From this standpoint, it is tempting to look backward and see the whole cosmic history as a preparation for us. But that is precisely where evolutionary narratives can become anthropocentric. Nothing in evolutionary biology indicates that the universe was trying to produce humans. The overwhelming majority of evolutionary history occurred without anything resembling human consciousness. Even on Earth, most evolutionary lineages disappeared without leaving descendants. The fact that we are here does not demonstrate that the universe was heading toward us. Dempsey's cosmic theology therefore requires a distinction between historical directionality and retrospective significance. Human beings can give the history of the universe meaning without necessarily being its predetermined destination. Emergentism versus WilberDempsey's relationship to Ken Wilber is especially interesting because Emergentism is simultaneously indebted to Integral Theory and a critique of it. Dempsey explicitly identifies Integral Theory as one of the major lineages from which Emergentism develops. He praises Wilber's extraordinary intellectual scope and his ability to integrate developmental, psychological, philosophical and spiritual perspectives. Yet he argues that Emergentism provides an important update. His criticism is partly scientific. He believes that contemporary complexity science offers a more appropriate foundation for evolutionary spirituality than some of the older metaphysical formulations of Integral Theory. It is also theological: Dempsey wants a more explicitly Western evolutionary theology, whereas he interprets Wilber's ultimate spiritual orientation as fundamentally Buddhist and centered on timeless, formless nonduality. This is a real difference. Wilber ultimately distinguishes evolutionary development from realization of the timeless Ground. Dempsey gives much greater significance to cosmic becoming itself. For Wilber, the deepest spiritual truth is not something produced by evolution. For Dempsey, evolution itself can become a vehicle of divine manifestation. That is a philosophically consequential divergence. Yet there is also an irony here. Dempsey criticizes Wilber for metaphysical overreach while introducing his own very large metaphysical claim: that the universe is developing toward ever-greater consciousness and that divinity itself can emerge within that process. In other words, Emergentism does not eliminate evolutionary metaphysics. It relocates it. Emergentism and Big HistoryDempsey's model is perhaps best understood alongside Big History rather than solely within the Integral tradition. Big History provides the empirical narrative: Big Bang, stars, chemical elements, planets, life, humans, agriculture, civilization and technological modernity. Emergentism adds an interpretive layer: these transitions represent increasing levels of organization, information, consciousness and meaning. That makes Dempsey particularly interesting for Big History because he confronts a question that scientific Big History often leaves open. What does the story mean? David Christian's approach deliberately separates the historical narrative from metaphysical speculation. Dempsey does almost the opposite. He takes the scientific narrative and asks what kind of spirituality might emerge from it. This is both his strength and his weakness. It is his strength because scientific facts alone do not automatically provide existential meaning. Humans inevitably interpret the cosmic story. It is his weakness because interpretation can easily masquerade as explanation. The Big Bang does not tell us that the universe has a purpose. Evolution does not tell us that consciousness is its goal. Complexity science does not tell us that God is emerging. Those are philosophical conclusions placed on top of the scientific narrative. The problem of inevitabilityA particularly important question is whether Dempsey's stages are genuinely inevitable. Matter ? Life ? Mind ? Culture is historically recognizable on Earth. But that does not prove that it constitutes a universal developmental law. Perhaps life is extremely rare. Perhaps intelligence is even rarer. Perhaps technological civilization is an evolutionary accident. Perhaps intelligence routinely destroys itself before reaching higher levels. Perhaps alternative forms of complexity can develop without consciousness. Perhaps the universe contains countless complex systems that never produce anything remotely like culture. A truly cosmic theory of emergence would need to distinguish between what is statistically likely, what is physically possible, what is historically contingent and what is metaphysically necessary. Dempsey's model currently tends to blur these categories. This is especially important when discussing future stages of evolution. Once the model reaches Culture, the temptation becomes strong to speculate about further levels of consciousness, collective intelligence, technological transformation or spiritual development. Such speculation can be illuminating. But it should be labeled as scenario-building rather than confused with established evolutionary science. The virtue of metamodernismThere is nevertheless something genuinely valuable about Dempsey's project. Emergentism is an attempt to escape the sterile opposition between scientific materialism and traditional supernaturalism. It does not require us to reject evolutionary biology in order to recover meaning. It does not require us to return to a pre-Darwinian creator. And it does not simply repeat traditional religious doctrines unchanged. Instead, it asks whether religious language can evolve along with our understanding of nature. That is quintessentially metamodern in spirit. Dempsey's proposal to redesign religious symbolism around cosmic evolution is therefore more interesting than another attempt to prove that ancient scriptures secretly anticipated modern science. He openly acknowledges that religions are cultural systems whose symbols can evolve. His call to "consciously evolve the Divine" is deliberately provocative. The danger is that a new mythology can acquire the authority of science merely because it uses scientific terminology. "Complexity," "emergence," "information," "self-organization," "adaptation" and "evolution" are scientifically respectable concepts. But putting them together in a cosmic narrative does not automatically make the resulting worldview scientific. A metaphysics can be scientifically informed without being scientific. That distinction should be preserved. A promising framework, but not yet a scientific theoryThe fairest assessment of Dempsey's Emergentism is therefore neither dismissal nor endorsement. It is not simply "new age" spirituality dressed up in scientific language. Dempsey is genuinely engaging with complexity theory, evolutionary science, developmental psychology, process philosophy and contemporary theories of consciousness. His attempt to synthesize these fields is intellectually serious. But neither is Emergentism a scientific theory of cosmic evolution. Its central scientific observations are compatible with mainstream science, but its strongest conclusions go beyond what those observations establish. Emergence is real. Complexity is real. Self-organization is real. Evolution is real. Increasing information-processing capacity through biological evolution is real. Cultural evolution is real. None of these propositions, individually or collectively, demonstrates that the universe possesses a cosmic drive toward consciousness, that evolution has an intrinsic purpose, or that God is progressively emerging through it. Those are philosophical and theological interpretations. And that is not necessarily a defect. Indeed, Dempsey's most interesting contribution may be precisely to show how a scientifically literate spirituality can be constructed without pretending that spirituality itself is science. The deeper philosophical questionUltimately, Emergentism confronts a question that cannot be settled by complexity science alone: Why is there a universe capable of generating novelty? Science can increasingly describe how novel organization arises. It can model self-organization, evolutionary dynamics, nonlinear interactions, information processing and emergent behavior. But whether this history possesses an intrinsic meaning is another question. Dempsey answers that question affirmatively. He sees the universe as something like an awakening processa cosmos progressively acquiring richer forms of organization, cognition and self-awareness. Humanity is therefore not an accidental spectator but an active participant in cosmic development. That is a beautiful idea. But beauty should not be confused with proof. The critical task is to preserve the distinction between the two. Perhaps the strongest version of Emergentism would therefore be slightly more modest than Dempsey's most enthusiastic formulations. Instead of saying that science demonstrates that the universe is awakening, one might say that the history disclosed by science can reasonably be interpreted as an awakening story. Instead of claiming that complexity necessarily moves toward God, one might say that human beings can interpret the emergence of consciousness as an opening toward transcendence. Instead of saying that evolution proves cosmic purpose, one might say that evolution gives us a new context in which questions of purpose can be posed. That would not make Emergentism less profound. It would make its epistemology stronger. Conclusion: emergence is real, but its meaning remains openBrendan Graham Dempsey has produced an ambitious synthesis at the intersection of Big History, complexity science, evolutionary spirituality, process theology and metamodernism. His central insightthat new levels of organization emerge from earlier ones and that this history can be interpreted as a progressive unfolding of new capacitiesis compelling. His greatest achievement is perhaps conceptual rather than scientific. He offers a vocabulary for imagining spirituality after Darwin: not a supernatural interruption of evolution, but a spirituality arising from within the evolutionary story itself. Yet the critical weakness of Emergentism lies exactly where its poetic power becomes greatest. The transition from emergence to direction, from direction to purpose, from purpose to consciousness, and from consciousness to God is not demonstrated by the science of complexity. The universe has unquestionably produced stars, chemistry, life, nervous systems, minds and cultures. Whether these constitute successive stages in a cosmic awakening is another matter. That distinction leaves Emergentism in an interesting middle position. It is neither conventional theology nor conventional science. It is a speculative metaphysics built upon a scientific narrative. And perhaps that is exactly what it should be called. Dempsey does not really demonstrate that the universe is awakening. He offers us a way of seeing it as if it were. The philosophical question is then not whether the metaphor is scientifically proven. It is whether, after the death of the old supernatural cosmologies, this metaphor can provide a compelling, intellectually responsible and existentially useful account of what the universeand we within itare becoming.
