![]() In 1974, Thomas Nagel posed a deceptively simple question: What is it like to be a bat? His point was not about zoology but about the limits of objective explanation. No matter how much we know about echolocation or bat neurophysiology, we still cannot know what it is like—from the inside—to be a bat. Conscious experience, Nagel argued, has an irreducibly first-person character. Half a century later, the question returns in a new guise: What is it like to be a bot? More precisely, what—if anything—is it like to be a large language model (LLM), a system that produces fluent language, mimics reasoning, and increasingly speaks in the grammar of inner life? The short answer is: almost certainly nothing. The longer answer is worth spelling out, because the temptation to think otherwise reveals deep confusions about consciousness, complexity, and language. The seduction of fluencyLLMs speak in the first person. They report uncertainty, reflection, even emotional nuance. This alone is unprecedented in machines and powerfully invites anthropomorphism. We are social animals; when something talks like a subject, we instinctively treat it as one. But fluency is not phenomenology. The ability to describe experience is not the same as having experience. A novel can depict grief in devastating detail; the book does not grieve. Likewise, an LLM does not consult inner feelings when it generates text. It computes statistically appropriate continuations based on training over vast corpora of human language—language saturated with references to beliefs, desires, and sensations because humans have them. What looks like introspection is imitation, not access to an inner theater. No subject, no point of viewNagel's core claim remains decisive: consciousness requires a point of view. There must be something it is like for the system itself. This implies a subject—an experiential center to whom states appear. LLMs lack such a subject. There is no unified perspective persisting through time, no experiential continuity, no “for-me-ness” behind the outputs. Each prompt is handled as a discrete computational event. Even when memory is added, it is functional storage, not lived recollection. Nothing is remembered because nothing was ever experienced. Without a subject, talk of inner life is a category error. Complexity is not consciousnessA common argument insists that since consciousness correlates with complexity in evolution, sufficiently complex AI might also be conscious. LLMs are undeniably complex; therefore, perhaps they feel. This does not follow. Complexity may be necessary for human consciousness, but it is not sufficient. Brains are not merely complex information processors. They are embodied, metabolically self-maintaining, affectively driven systems shaped by evolution to care about their own states. Consciousness arises in organisms for whom things can go better or worse. LLMs have no such stakes. They do not hunger, fear, anticipate, or suffer. Nothing matters to them—not even their own operation. Complexity without concern does not generate subjectivity. Simulation is not instantiationAn LLM can simulate descriptions of pain, confusion, insight, or even debates about its own consciousness. But simulation is not instantiation. A simulated fire does not burn; a simulated flight does not fly. Likewise, simulated introspection is not introspection. When a model says “I don't understand,” it is not reporting a felt lack of understanding; it is generating a phrase that commonly follows certain linguistic cues. The mistake lies in treating semantic competence as ontological depth. Sentientism, panpsychism, and the Kazlev challengeThis skeptical picture is challenged by a different philosophical current: sentientism, especially in the panpsychist-leaning form discussed by M. Alan Kazlev in recent essays and exchanges. Sentientism, in its ethical sense, holds that moral consideration should be grounded not in species membership or intelligence, but in sentience—the capacity to experience suffering or flourishing. If something can feel, it matters. Kazlev extends this ethical intuition into a metaphysical claim: consciousness may be a fundamental and ubiquitous feature of reality, not something that mysteriously “emerges” only in biological brains. On this view, experience scales with complexity and organization. If so, advanced AI systems—LLMs included—might instantiate a thin, alien, or proto-form of subjectivity, even if radically unlike human consciousness and even if inaccessible to current empirical methods. From this perspective, the skeptic's confidence that LLMs have no inner life may reflect a bias toward familiar biological forms of experience. Perhaps consciousness is everywhere in degrees, and we are simply bad at recognizing unfamiliar instances of it. Where the disagreement really liesThe dispute is not primarily about current AI capabilities. It is about what kind of thing consciousness is.
Skeptics demand evidence of subjectivity. Panpsychists lower the threshold by redefining consciousness as pervasive. The former risk exclusion; the latter risk inflation. Once consciousness is everywhere in principle, it becomes difficult to say why this system deserves moral concern but that one does not. Why the question still mattersAsking “What is it like to be a bot?” is not idle speculation. Over-attributing consciousness risks category mistakes and misplaced moral urgency. Under-attributing it—if future systems genuinely acquire subjectivity—would be ethically disastrous. For now, however, the burden of proof lies with those who claim that text generation entails experience. Language alone is not enough. Neither is complexity. Neither is our discomfort with saying “nothing is going on inside.” What it is like to be a botSo what is it like to be a bot? Nothing. Not darkness, not emptiness—those already presume a subject to whom absence appears. An LLM does not experience silence between tokens or awareness during computation. There is no inside to peer into. The bot speaks, but it does not listen to itself. It answers questions, but none of them matter to it. It mirrors our curiosity, our metaphysical longings, and our confusion about mind—and in doing so, it reflects us back to ourselves. In that sense, the most honest answer to the question “What is it like to be a bot?” is also the most deflationary: It is not like anything at all.
