In those dark moments I can well understand his desire for action—action that will affect the most immediate change possible. In large measure I agree with Elliot's response; overt violent action is not an ethical option for the integral community. But I do have a slightly different perspective on this. So Gandhi actually needed violence as the background for his success, and we should never forget this, as history is full of hidden variables and unsung heroes. Second, toward the end before he was assassinated, MLK was coming to the realization that the Black struggle for civil rights was part of a much wider struggle for economic and social justice against the predatory imperialist system of the West, and he knew that although desirable, peaceful protest in all circumstances may not be possible. Although a laudable goal, I think Bryan is getting a little ahead of himself with this idealism, and he is by no means alone, for many greens and integral community members feel the same way as Bryan. So let me stand alone among the masses of bleeding hearts who romantically envision a would-be utopia of non-violence, by saying, unequivocally: never has there been, and never will there be, major social transformation based on peaceful non-violence without first having social justice based on principled egalitarian social relations that are culturally and institutionally supported by the power and force of law. For a complete account of our recent dialogue essays on violence, see [1]. However, in this essay I will briefly respond to Joe's essay: Reply to Benjamin on the Usefulness of Violence and Bryan's essay: An Integral Use of Violence: A Third Perspective: Response to Joe Corbett and Elliot Benjamin.
