Indeed, the history of successorship (from Kings to CEO's to Gurus) has been replete with broken (or brokered?) nexus points. What lineage does for us, albeit naively, is give us the illusion of something permanent, something traditional, something legitimate. And, no doubt, lineage can work as an important confidence booster for the would-be neophyte to trust his or her guru more.
