As we have seen, Wilber’s Integral Model is a hierarchical stage model, a “growth-to-goodness” concept of human development. But what is it that evolves? For Wilber, and for Assagioli, it is the Self – the seat of identity and awareness. What Assagioli calls the personal self, the center of pure consciousness and will , becomes in Wilber’s terminology to the “Proximate Self” or the observing self.
